A man was seen with a machete at Lake Rd/Tarewa Rd intersection.

Police have been called to an incident near Rotorua's central city after reports of a man with a machete.

Police were notified by members of the public about 12.50pm to the incident on the corner of Lake Rd and Tarewa Rd.

A police communications spokeswoman said police were told a man had got out of a car with a machete.

Police have this afternoon arrested a man in relation to the incident and he is expected to appear in court once charges have been confirmed.

Rotorua police are asking any witnesses to contact them.
