Rotorua architectural designer Darryl Church has scored three awards in a prestigious regional design competition.
Mr Church won the regional Residential Alterations and Additions Design Award, the Commercial/Industrial Design Award and the Commercial Interior Design Award at the ADNZ/Resene Regional Design Awards for Bay of Plenty, held at Mills Reef Winery in Tauranga last night.
Mr Church is the managing director of Darryl Church Architecture.
His third win in the Residential Alterations and Additions Design category was for an extension to a residential property that created an outdoor living and entertaining space with an open fire, gabled roof canopy and barbecue. Judges commented that the design "reveals great skills by the designer".
Mr Church's two other awards were for a conversion on an existing commercial building where it was reclad, veiled in glass and reinvented as an accountant's office.
The initial concept for the Bright Wild Thomas makeover was rejected by town planners who perceived elements of the design contravened their urban design guide. However, Mr Church and his team persisted, motivated by the company's connection to Lake Rotorua and Mokoia Island. They presented strong research to support their design and went on to develop an iconic and award-winning building.
The interior design replicated the Mokoia Island theme with flooring, artwork, lighting and colour choices all reflecting the relationship between the island and the lake viewed from the practice's former building and used in the company logo.
Regional category winners' projects will be submitted for the national awards that will be presented at the ADNZ/Resene Design Awards Gala Dinner at Te Papa, Wellington on October 28.
