The popular Buried Village tourist attraction is opening its doors free this weekend to commemorate 129 years since the historic Mt Tarawera eruption.
The annual open weekend gives members of the public the chance to peruse the attraction during its regular business hours, from 9am to 4pm.
As well as having the opportunity to see the excavated ruins of the village and recovered relics on display in the museum, the public will also be able to enjoy family friendly entertainment and activities.
Manager Pam McGrath said the open day was the perfect opportunity for locals and tourists to learn about the history of the Tarawera eruption and the tourism industry.
"The fact that people, both visitors and locals, can come down for free is a big draw and a good excuse to get out of the house and have a look around.
