"It was pretty cool. There was a lot of competition and it was pretty challenging."
He said his goal before the tournament was to make the final.
"I was seeded number two, so I just really wanted to get past the semifinals."
In the final on Wednesday, he went up against the current 12-and-under national champion.
"It was a pretty tough final. He was winning at the start, he was smashing me, then I started playing well," he said.
"I have played him before at the nationals [earlier this year] and I lost to him."
He said it was a great feeling to win the gold medal. Nick's parents and football friends, who were also competing at the AIMS Games, watched the final and congratulated him after the big victory.
Nick said they went to McDonald's on the way home to celebrate.
Nick's dad and coach Guy Beamish said he was really proud of his son, and that was his best result to date. "We are over the moon."
Nick is currently in Year 7 at Rotorua Intermediate and will get a chance to defend his tennis title at the AIMS Games next year. Nick played and won six games in all to take home the gold medal this week.
In a tiring day of matches on Wednesday, Nick and grand final opponent Kurt had to play their quarter-final, semifinal and final all on the same day.
Nick's older brother Ryan Beamish also plays tennis and was part of the Rotorua men's senior team which won their first match of the season against Thames last weekend.
