Hundreds of Waikato children who otherwise wouldn't have presents to unwrap on Christmas Day, will now do so thanks to the generosity of the community.
Thousands of toys which were donated to The Hits Toy Run appeal will be distributed to needy children and families this week.
A bus, donated for use along with a driver by Go Bus, toured the region last week collecting toys. The bus arrived at St Vincent de Paul in Frankton on Monday afternoon where an army of volunteers set about unloading the goodies and sorting them.
St Vincent de Paul Waikato general manager Mike Rolton said last year's toy run saw 2500 children from 920 families receive toys. While he said it was difficult to judge toy numbers this year, he thought there may well be more donated this time around.
He said agencies that St Vincent de Paul works with throughout the year would trundle through the organisation this week selecting toys for children they know will enjoy them this Christmas.
