Sport Waikato is giving its staff time off work to spend a day helping out on community projects.

Usually a full staff team meeting day, September 19 has been turned into the Good Sorts for Sport day helping out around the Waikato region with three very worthy projects.

More than 15 applications were received from as far away as Coromandel and Taupo, and these were then shortlisted with the final three projects chosen - Maeroa Intermediate School in Hamilton, Morrinsville Croquet Club and the Waikato River Trails in South Waikato.

Up to 80 staff will be working on the projects, from helping to build a fitness trail around Maeroa Intermediate School, painting the implement sheds at the croquet club and clearing and planting on the river trails.

"As a regional sports trust, we are very excited to be able to spend this time helping out in our region. Sport Waikato's vision is 'out there and active' and we love that these projects are part of achieving that vision," says Sport Waikato CEO Matthew Cooper.

Sport Waikato would like to challenge other organisations to take on some of the remaining project applications they have received.

"It has been very difficult to narrow down to just three projects - these clubs, schools and organisations would so appreciate any help that businesses could offer.

"If we can get together as a community to lend a hand, we can make a real difference to helping our region to be more physically active," said Mr Cooper.
