Waikato residents who are single and ready to mingle are invited to a speed dating night in Ōhaupō.

The event at Windy Ridge is run by Speed Dating Hamilton, a business that aims to help Waikato singles find love.

Hamilton man Tomek Pietkiewicz, 30, started the venture last April and has since run nine events around Hamilton.

It's the first time the event has been held outside Hamilton, and Tomek is looking forward to helping Waikato residents find their special someone.

"I thought it was fitting that on our 10th night we branch out to a rural Waikato area and bring it to the beautiful Windy Ridge venue."

The speed dating nights typically attract about 90 single people — usually an equal split of males and females.

Participants are given a number upon arrival. They spend three minutes with each date and write down the numbers of people they connect with.

If both individuals write down each other's numbers, they are later emailed contact details.

Tomek says his speed dating events are hugely successful. Since they started last year 6000 numbers have been exchanged, and a couple who met at one of the events last year is now engaged.

Tomek says the speed dating format brings dating back to basics.

"It's a fun and safe way to experience dating," he says.

"You can put away your phone for the night and have some fun face-to-face interactions."

The speed dating lasts about three hours and is usually followed by an onsite after-party.

"We keep the drinks and the fun times flowing."

Tomek, who has Bachelor of Business Analysis from the University of Waikato, would one day like to take the speed dating events around New Zealand.

He also wants to expand to include a matchmaking and date-planning service.

Tomek hopes the event will appeal to Waikato residents, and encourages people to register early.

"I want to give people hope that there's someone out there for them."
