A man used a cut-down shotgun when he robbed a bank in Te Awamutu.

About 4.15pm on Wednesday, the man entered the ASB Bank on George St and demanded money.

"An unknown amount of cash was taken before the male ran off down an alleyway towards the back of the Countdown supermarket," a detective said.

Police described the robber as a stocky Maori or Pacific Islander who was wearing a grey hoodie top that covered his head and a scarf that covered his lower face.

He also had on dark long pants and sand shoes, and was carrying a dark-coloured backpack-styled school bag.

Police would like to hear from anyone who was in the area of the ASB Bank or the Countdown supermarket car park between 4pm and 4.30pm who saw a man fitting this description.

Anyone with information can call the Te Awamutu station on (07) 872-0100 or anonymously via Crimestoppers 0800-555-111.
