A silver Audi crashed off a Hamilton roundabout yesterday, landing at a portal of a tunnel for cyclists and pedestrians.
The drop from the road to the foot and cycle path is about 3m.
The driver left before police got to the scene of the crash, which occurred about 7.30am
at the intersection of Wairere Drive, Gordonton Rd and Crosby Rd in the suburb of Chartwell.
A police spokeswoman said officers were "continuing inquiries to locate the owner and the driver of the vehicle".
The car has been towed and the Waikato police said on Facebook: "The roads were wet this morning in Hamilton and the driver of this vehicle was not driving to the conditions; with witnesses believing the vehicle was travelling in excess of 100km/h."
