About 100 players tee off there for twilight golf most Thursday nights.
The first time Stu scored under his age was a decade ago at the Whangamatā Golf Club. He was 69 and scored 68.
He cracked the century at Ngāhinapōuri last week.
Aviation is Reid’s main hobby, but he aims to fit two rounds of golf in per week.
“The younger you are, the harder it is. It’s pretty hard to play under your age until you get over 70. In the last few years, I’ve done it pretty regularly,” he said.
“I’ve done it more than 100 times and I’ve recorded all of them [in a book]. If you play to your age or under your age, it works out.”
Reid said most golf courses are par 72 for 18 holes.
“Plenty of people have achieved this, but I’m 80 next year, and from now over the next 10 years, I’m going to play a lot more times under it. I hope.”
Reid competed in his first Ngāhinapōuri Golf Club championships in 1964 when he was 19.
He has won the champs 32 times across those seven decades.
“He’s won it at least once in all of those decades. It’s quite an achievement,” longtime friend Murray Jess said.
“To do it an eighth time, he’d have to be at least 84.”
The list of accolades is never-ending. Reid played Waikato rep golf for 30 years and represented New Zealand.
Reid also recently won his club’s 2024 shoot-out competition, the first time he had entered.
“I’ve been over to Aussie and I’ve represented my country, I played seniors over in Singapore,” Reid said.
“That was really neat.”
With his love of the game still at a high, there are many more achievements still to come.
