A man has been charged with threatening to harm people or property after a suspicious package was left in a toilet block at a Hamilton park.

City Area Commander Inspector John Kelly said a 27-year-old Ngaruawahia man was arrested overnight and will appear before Hamilton District Court today.

Mr Kelly said the arrest was testament to the work carried out by agencies who had responded to a series of hoax events.

"A lot of work goes on behind the scenes in such situations with the various agencies all working to keep the public safe."
