Two Te Awamutu Intermediate bands placed at the Rockshop Band Quest on Tuesday night, adding to a haul of awards from the Band Slam competition held last Friday.
School bands from all over the Waikato took to the stage at Clarence St Theatre for the regional Rockshop Band Quest competition.
The intermediate bands were Ace of Shovels and 8 Positive Pies.
Ace of Shovels performed a cover of a song by American rock duo band Best Coast as well as an original piece called It doesn't matter. They placed second in the competition.
8 Positive Pies performed a cover of a song by the band The Bets and an original song called I don't know. They placed third in the competition.
Te Awamutu Intermediate teacher and rock band manager Logan Kimber says Year-7 student Lillie Dixon was the driving force behind the writing of 8 Positive Pies' original song.
"I'm so proud that they write their own songs and I think that differentiates them from some of the other schools," says Logan.
At the Band Slam competition, 8 Positive Pies placed second overall and Lillie came away with first place for both Best Female Vocals and Best on Keyboard.
Te Pahu School also had two bands, Freeze Point and Hardcore Cadence, enter into both competitions.
Freeze Point played a cover of Knights of Cydonia by Muse at both competitions and for the first time ever performed their original song called Planet Earth at Band Quest.
One of the band members, Finn, says the lyrics for the original song came naturally after they had written the song.
"The motivation for the lyrics was that we are aliens on a spaceship, and we've come on a rocket to explore and find a new adventure," says Finn.
Hardcore Cadence performed covers of the Black Keys Lonely Boy and Zombie by the Cranberries.
From Band Quest, Freeze Point band member Emerson won Best Rocking Drummer and Hardcore Cadence band member Emily won the Musicianship Award.
