Since when did finding the right candidate for a job become a gender issue?
The Labour Party adopted a new policy at its conference earlier this month which will mean 50 per cent of the Labour caucus must be female by 2017. Right now that figure sits at 42 per cent.
Whatever happened to landing a job - in the political arena or otherwise - because you were the right person for the job based on the skills and experience you brought to the role?
Suffragettes fought for women's rights and equality in society. A century on from women being given the right to vote, there are intelligent, strong women making a difference in Parliament. They work alongside astute, tenacious men. So why should we make allowances for a person's reproductive organs when it comes time to elect our MPs?
I couldn't care less whether my local MP was a man or a woman. I just expect that person to have the knowledge and capability to represent constituents to the best of his or her ability.
