A man has been found fighting for his life on a rural Waikato road this morning.
Police are trying to figure out how the man turned up injured on Hampton Downs Rd in Whangamarino.
The man was taken to Auckland City Hospital where he remains in critical condition.
A reporter at the scene said Hampton Downs Rd was closed from where it intersected with Landfill Access Rd.
There were two police vehicles parked on Hampton Downs Rd. Traffic control contractors were parked at the intersection marking the road closure.
A Hato Hone St John spokesperson said ambulances responded to an incident on Hampton Downs Rd at about 5am.
“The incident was attended by one first response unit, one ambulance, two rapid response units and one road manager.”

Cordons have since been removed and the road reopened.
Police are appealing for information from anyone who was travelling in the Hampton Downs area between 10pm on Sunday, October 13 and 1am on Monday, October 14. This includes any dashcam footage.
Police said: “If you have any information that could help our inquiries, please update us online now or call 105.
