Two brass bands are coming together to present a concert series in Hamilton and Matamata on Saturday and Sunday.
Hamilton City Brass under musical director Glenn Richards will combine with their friends from Matamata Brass under the musical direction of Memorie Brooky for two concerts.
Brooky is thrilled to have both bands performing together.
"Being able to collaborate with a band such as Hamilton City Brass has been a wonderful opportunity for us. We are excited to present the Sounds of the Waikato concert to the people of Hamilton and Matamata," Memorie says.
The concert programme that Memorie and Glenn have compiled celebrates a wide variety of music. With genres covering pop, classical, rock and swing, there will be music to suit all tastes.
Known for exciting concert programmes, Hamilton City Brass will not disappoint with dramatic numbers such as Toccata in D Minor, Dance of the Tumblers, whilst also showing their tender side with the beautiful hymn The Day Thou Gavest and their fun side with Dave Dobbyn's Kiwi classic Slice of Heaven.
Matamata Brass' programme will showcase a number of their players including talented cornetists Robin Jobe and Kaperiera Hughes playing a beautiful arrangement of Pie Jesu as well as featuring the vocal talent of members within their band.
Always a crowd favourite, Pokarekare Ana played by Matamata's flugel horn player will delight.
Audience goers are in for a treat with a big finale when both bands join to make one mass band and really show off the true power and beauty of brass bands.
With the New Zealand Brass Band Championships being held in Hamilton in early July, the focus of both bands will turn to the preparation required to compete at the top level of brass band contesting in New Zealand.
The championships comprise solo, ensemble, band and marching events along with a Gala Concert over five days of competition.
Hamilton City Brass will compete in the A-Grade section and Matamata Brass will be a strong contender in the D-Grade section – and both bands will be popular local favourites in the eye-catching Parade of Bands marching competition.
