Hamilton Junior High School is following in pumpkin fanatic Grace Lusty's footsteps, growing a pumpkin estimated to be between 50 to 60kg.

Shane Cappie, a technology teacher who also runs a gardening group at the school, says it's the students' first year growing pumpkins. They started after Grace donated a pile of her prized pumpkin seeds to the school.

Hamilton News featured Grace late last year as she began to prepare the soil at her home for her pumpkin-growing efforts ahead of the Great Pumpkin Carnival next month.

Shane, pictured with student Rihari Fenton, says the pumpkin was planted around October last year and has been watered and fed "worm juice" from their worm farm, to help it grow.

The pumpkin will be in the Giant Pumpkin Carnival at Hamilton Gardens on March 30.
