"You work at it for so long, and to think we're only new, but to actually get into something prestigious like that is quite good."
Recently their chocolate pie took out a silver medal in the Bakels Supreme Pie awards cafe/boutique category and has been nicknamed the 'unsung hero' because of its plain exterior, but incredible taste.
"He looks so plain. It doesn't get much recognition, but it certainly tastes great," Stephanie said.
Andrew said the pie was decked out for the awards though, with sour cherry truffles and chocolate cage.
The couple have been involved in the food industry for more than 10 years, working together in a successful Australian cake franchise. Stephanie said they saw a gap in the market for New Zealand-specific cakes.
"We took a year out after Australia. The 'itch' was always for Andrew to open his own shop. While we were working in the industry, in the franchise, [there were] too many limitations and restrictions and we thought, their idea is great, but it doesn't allow for New Zealanders and our tastes.
"We know our market because we are Kiwis. We use as much locally sourced product and produce as we can."
The business is family orientated with both the Fitzpatricks' son and daughter lending a hand during the week and on Sunday to give either Stephanie or Andrew "a well deserved" day off.
Stephanie said customer service is their highest priority. The baking is as fresh as possible, though cakes often have to be made the night before to allow cooling for decoration.
"We make them in small batches depending on what it is. Our mud cake and gateau range and our base cakes of our 'just cake' range have to be prepped the night before ... the cream needs to firm, ganache needs to set, so we have to make them over a period of time. There is so much to a cake."
Cake Box is on Lake Rd, Frankton.
