Hamilton author Jeff Taylor has spent 50 years working and living near Hamilton lake, so it made sense he'd write a book about it.

Many Hamiltonians have a soft spot for the iconic location. Lake Rotoroa, as it's officially known, has been a go-to venue for many a family picnic, a place for the kids to burn off some energy at the playground, followed by an ice-cream from the kiosk.

A former pharmacist, Jeff says the book is a retirement project. While his time spent scouring the library and council's heritage files has garnered some good leads, he wants to hear from anyone with a story to tell, or a photo to share.

During his career, Jeff came to know many old-timers and local identities. Some have passed away and he says it's a shame their wonderful stories weren't harnessed for posterity. He's certain there are plenty of people with fond memories of the area they could share. He's particularly keen to hear about past events held on or around the lake - sporting and cultural.

The book won't be the "expensive coffee table kind". Jeff wants it to be accessible and reasonably priced. Book proceeds will go to Hospice - a charity close to Jeff and his wife Robyn. Their daughter, Nicola, passed away last year after battling a brain tumour.

Jeff hopes to publish the book in time for Hamilton's 150th anniversary next year.
