Hamilton Hawks American Football club managed to take down the previously undefeated Auckland Metro City Lions last weekend in the Unity Bowl with a six-nil win.

The club has three teams: a senior team for those aged over 20, the Colts team who scored the win against Auckland for ages 16-20, and a junior team for ages 13-16.

Coach Lance Fatupaito said he began on the side of the field watching his brother, then as a player when he was old enough, moving onto coach from there.

He said the fast-paced, hard-hitting sport had been around for years but the Hamilton Hawks first put a team together in 2005. And now the club wants to promote the sport even more.

Manager Paul Fata said they start preseason around September, "just trying to encourage people to come and play".

"NFL super bowl plays a big role in it, now more people are interested in the super bowl, getting more exposure through there people are actually starting to see that this sport exists."

He said there is a position for everyone and people don't need to have knowledge of the sport in order to join the team.
