Wintec students got right into the swing of a novel way to welcome Matariki.
The Gallagher Hub was buzzing as lunch time crowds supported more than a dozen students who registered to test their voices in the first of two heats in a karaoke competition with cash prizes for the winners.
Winners split $600 - $300 for first [place, $300 for second and $100 or third.
Students sang the songs of their choice and were judged on sound and entertainment qualities.
Organiser and MC Korikori Hawkins says it was a fun way to welcome in the Maori New Year.
