In 1975 the Hamilton Square Dancers Inc. was formed and over the following years hundreds of people have enjoyed the fun, companionship and enjoyable exercise, not to mention the dancing, that the club has offered.
There are numerous square dance clubs throughout New Zealand and the club travels regularly to clubs in the Bay of Plenty and Auckland areas and once a year on Queens Birthday weekend a national convention is held at various locations around the country.
Square dancing is non-competitive and is simply recreational. The dancing is done in a square formation involving 4 couples, one for each side of the square.
At the front of the hall stands the "caller" who is responsible for giving the directions for the dance. These directions are made up of movements which are taught to the dancers over a period of time.
When square dancing was first done you could learn all these movements in an evening which was fine but after a while dancers wanted more of a challenge.
Today's square dancing provides this challenge and is set to a wide variety of music from today's latest hits to the old classics and everything in between.
On Sunday March 4, Sunday March 11, and Sunday March 24 the Hamilton Square Dancers will be at the Hamilton Gardens dancing on the round lawn in front of the main pavilion between 1pm and 3pm for those that wish to find out a bit more about the activity.
The club will be holding introductory nights for people who would like to give square dancing a go on Thursdays 15, 22, & 29 March at 7.30 pm.
These will be FREE evenings and will be held in the Frankton Primary School Hall on Rifle Range Rd. For those who decide the activity may be for them the club will be running a 10 week course following the introductory nights. For more information phone 0800 8 2 SQUARE and talk to Tom or Raewyn.
