One of my favourite adventure/platforming franchises from PlayStation 2 has been remastered in full high definition and all three games re-released on Blu-ray.
Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy, Jak II: Renegade and Jak 3 have been polished up and are looking better than ever in this package that represents amazing value for money.
Even if Naughty Dog had repackaged just the first two games, this would have been well worth it. Jak 3 is widely considered the worst of the series and the game where the developers tried to change things for the sake of change. It didn't work, and the wheels fell off completely. The next game in the series, Daxter, was released on PSP alone and successfully returned to its pure platforming roots.
I spent hours upon hours playing Jak and Daxter back in the day. The battle to collect every Precursor Orb and Power Cell was all-consuming. I could barely fault the original PS2 game. But playing it through once again made me realise what we used to put up with 10 years ago. The issues that Jak and Daxter has with the third-person camera view would never be tolerated in this day and age, yet at the time were perfectly acceptable, and in some cases "groundbreaking". There are countless times where you simply can't see where you're jumping to, or where the enemy is.
We've been spoilt in this current console generation, and remastered releases of old games really do underline that fact. But if you can see past the glitches, there's a whole heap of nostalgic fun to be had here. Ian Knott
