BUCHAREST, Romania (AP) Romania has told its citizens in Syria to leave the country "as soon as possible" amid fears that the violence there is escalating.
The foreign ministry said in a statement Thursday the situation in Syria was rapidly deteriorating with "fears about the possible breakout of extreme violence," as the United States and its allies indicate they are likely to launch retaliatory military action against Syrian President Bashar Assad over the alleged use of chemical weapons near Damascus on Aug. 21.
The statement told Romanians to leave via Lebanon, Jordan and Turkey.
