KEY POINTS:
An Australian man has been arrested in Bulgaria and charged with paedophilia, local police say.
Police in the Black Sea city of Varna said in a statement today that Canberra-born Australian medic, Joseph Lee Smith, 35, was arrested on November 7 in an apartment.
They allege he was found in the company of two under-aged boys, and a camera, video camera and a number of CDs were seized.
The content of the CDs is not known.
Local media reported that police had found sex toys and stimulants.
Police allege that between November 4 and 7, the Australian had produced pornographic materials and had sexual contact with three under-aged boys.
The Varna Regional Court has ordered Smith be remanded in custody because he entered Bulgaria on a tourist visa and might try to leave the country if granted bail.
He can appeal the courts' decision on November 18.
If found guilty on the charge of having sexual contact with minors and of creating a pornographic network, the Australian could face up to six years imprisonment.
