A group of Carterton School pupils gathered in their town library on Thursday to mark World Fish Migration day and learn about some of the native fish that call the region home.
Brigitte Marulli de Barletta, Greater Wellington Regional Council senior communications advisor, said facilitators Gill Stewart and Rachel Tobin had been over the past week telling stories and leading activity events for preschoolers and primary schoolchildren at libraries in Featherston, Masterton, Wellington City, Porirua, Paraparaumu, Lower Hutt, and Upper Hutt.
The regional council had organised the World Fish Migration Day events in partnership with town libraries and The Whitebait Wiggle, specially written for young readers by Wairarapa-based freshwater biologist Amber McEwan, was read out at the events.
Ms McEwen also wrote the book What's That Living In My Stream and both books are to be donated to libraries and schools participating in the events. Mrs Marulli de Barletta said participants also heard "how our native freshwater fish spawn far out at sea, make the risky journey up river and lead a secretive adult life in streams, rivers and wetlands".
