ATTACK IN CANCUN WORRIES TOURISTS: Eight people were killed last week after unidentified offenders threw Molotov cocktails into a bar in the resort town of Cancun, Mexico, in what appeared to be a drug-related attack.
While the bar wasn't in the part of town frequented by tourists, it is another blow for the country, which is still reeling from last year's swine flu outbreak and the ongoing drug cartel-related violence in the country's north.
It's clearly also rattled travellers from the US, if their reaction to a USA Today story on the issue is anything to go by.
The article posed the question: "Has the escalating violence in parts of Mexico impacted your vacation choices?" and has so far garnered 180 comments.
However some tourism operators in Mexico say they are concerned international perceptions of the violence don't match reality.
"Tourism has dropped dramatically, and many small businesses have been forced to close. It is a difficult time made more frustrating by the knowledge that visitors to our part of Mexico are perfectly safe," Tony and Cheri Head, co-owners of a hotel in Playa del Carmen wrote in an email to USA Today.

CARIBBEAN FLAVOUR IN THE HEART OF LONDON: The annual Notting Hill Carnival took place last weekend, with more than one million people cramming the streets to dance, watch costumed performers and listen to the sounds of Caribbean steel bands.
The carnival has been held in the West London suburb every August Bank Holiday weekend since 1964 and is modelled on the street festivals of Trinidad, which emerged in the early 19th century to celebrate the end of the slave trade.
The flavours of the Caribbean are also apparent in the food served at the carnival, with stalls selling specialities like curries and jerk chicken.
Today, the event is a celebration of many different cultures and its popularity has turned it into Europe's biggest street festival.
