TURIN, Italy (AP) Diego Ulissi of Italy won the Milano-Torino road race on Wednesday, as defending champion Alberto Contador finished fifth.
Ulissi, who was runner-up in last year's edition, attacked on the final climb to the Basilica di Superga, pulling away from a leading group of six riders 250 meters from the line. He finished in 4 hours, 21 minutes and 2 seconds on the 193.5 kilometer (120.24 mile) course.
Rafal Majka was second, three seconds behind Lampre's Ulissi, with Dani Moreno third, two seconds further back.
Contador was 11 seconds behind Ulissi.
Ulissi said: "Because of the bruises I got in the two crashes during the world championships, this morning my feelings were not so good. Beating such top riders, immediately after the world championships, is certainly a huge satisfaction."
