The New Zealand leg of the International Rugby Board (IRB) sevens world series will remain in Wellington until at least 2016 after the New Zealand Rugby Union (NZRU) extended the capital's hosting rights for another five years.
NZRU chief executive Steve Tew said the event had developed a unique identity in Wellington, which had captured the imagination of New Zealand fans and sevens rugby followers around the world after hosting the tournament since its inception in 2000.
"After a thorough review and an invitation for bids from other centres, Wellington delivered a compelling case to keep the event here in the capital and we were happy to agree," Tew said.
The New Zealand sevens in Wellington each February is one of the most popular sports and entertainment events in New Zealand, and a 2008 survey suggested it generated $15.6 million for the Wellington economy.
It is one of eight stops on the IRB's world series circuit.
The decision to award the tournament to Wellington for a further five years was subject to the finalisation of the agreement between NZRU and the IRB, Tew said.
