The debate over the starting All Black No 10 for the test against Australia is over, but the competition for best squad autograph-signer was alive and well in Newmarket yesterday.
Faced with signing more than 300 rugby balls, T-shirts and boots, most of the five players chose the heads-down, grim-faced approach. Player E, perhaps buoyed by his starting selection tomorrow, managed a tentative smile and steady handshake throughout the one hour session.
Looking back over a queue which snaked through the store, out the door and along Broadway, he said he was only just fighting off autograph cramp.
His signature, unfortunately, was the poorest of the five, barely extending itself beyond initials.
Jack Malcolm, 9, didn't seem to mind - his 10 seconds with the All Blacks was "like Christmas". Player D's signature skipped at least nine letters, while Player A provided a work of art, complete with spirals and loops.
