A near-perfect performance by the Auckland 39ers saw them win their third successive men's National Softball League title at Lower Hutt's Fraser Park on Saturday. The side comfortably beat the Wellington Lancers 9-0 in just five innings.
"Winning a third title has always been the aim," Auckland 39ers player coach Donny Hale said. "But you never take anything for granted. Wellington can come back at any time and, despite that score, it was not over until that final out was made."
The only blemish on the near-perfect performance for Hale's side was the six hits Heinie Shannon gave up.
The Auckland 39ers made a dream start, scoring two runs in the first innings, adding a further five in the third and two more runs in the fourth innings.
Standout performer was catcher Patrick Shannon, who picked up three hits from as many turns at bat, scored three runs and had a hand in another three of his side's runs.
In the earlier women's final, the Auckland Angels were unable to stop Hutt Valley from winning a third consecutive crown, The team took out the title in five innings, winning 10-2.
For Hutt Valley, Cindy Potae and Katrina Stockford scored two runs each.
For the Auckland Angels, Rebecca Bromhead and Sina Hunkin scored runs in the third innings to put their side within three of their opponents. However, Hutt Valley scored an additional five runs in two innings and the Angels were unable to find an answer to the solid pitching from former international Alisha Manley.
Manley finished the game with five strikeouts and gave up only one hit. In contrast Auckland's starting pitcher Michal Tangaroa lasted two innings, gave up four hits and took two strikeouts. Her replacement, Sheree Cartwright, pitched out the last three innings and gave up six hits.
