KEY POINTS:
Warriors back-rower Wairangi Koopu has taken his first major step towards switching codes.
Koopu is off contract with the Warriors at the end of this season and has expressed a desire to play rugby union.
He is yet to sign a contract, but has trained with Auckland's Air New Zealand Cup squad.
Auckland coach Shane Howarth says Koopu can continue training with the squad for as long as he likes.
Howarth says Koopu has only trained with Auckland once but is hugely respected by the Auckland players and they are keen to do what they can to help.
Shane Howarth says Koopu would have to play for their development team or emerging players team first, before being considered for Auckland selection.
