"He's been researching and said that one day he would go to the top, but he would tip toe so he didn't wake up the mountain. Hes had some really nasty tests at the beginning of the year so we thought we would do something that takes his mind off things."
Mr Reinders got in touch with Ngati Rangitihi Trusts Ken Raureti, who offered to take the family up the mountain in a four wheel drive. The trust manages the mountain.
"But we would still have a two-hour hike, so they recommended a helicopter."
Within 24 hours of contacting Helipro they were booked on to a scenic flight and an extra seat was given to Rotorua Daily Post photographer Ben Fraser to capture the memory.
On Saturday Liam and Mr Reinders flew from the Rotorua International Airport on to Mt Tarawera. They walked a short distance to the top and then around the crater.
"He couldn't stop smiling", Mr Reinders said.
"He was absolutely stoked. For us as parents it was fantastic to be able to fulfil his wish of getting up there. We know he wouldn't ever be able to hike up there."
"We don't know what his future holds for him but where there's a will there's a way, this time the way was with Helipro."
Helipro quality manager and pilot Nic Mansley said Saturday offered perfect conditions for the trip.
"He was very excited," Mr Mansley said.
"We could see from White Island through to Ruapehu, the line of volcanoes."
"When opportunities present themselves this is something we like to do. Liam is a very chirpy little chap with a great outlook on life."
"It's always nice to see everyone's reactions when we get to the top but more so when your'e doing it for a lad with challenges and a real interest in it."
