An Auckland couple's wise investment in a massive piece of prime city land has provided a windfall for their family 61 years later.
Anne and Robert Ecclesfield bought 23 Gilfillan St in the up-and-coming suburb of Blockhouse Bay for a few thousand pounds in 1952.
This week, their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren are celebrating after it sold for $2.48 million at auction.
That's $1.2 million over its current valuation of $1.27 million.
Mr Ecclesfield built the tiny two-bedroom, one bathroom, two-storey brick bungalow that sits on the 3619sq m section for his wife and two of their four children to live in. It is not known how much the couple purchased the land for as Quotable Value and Land Information NZ do not hold many records on sales from before the 1980s, but it is not likely to have exceeded a few thousand pounds.
