Australian Joshua Adam Ufer, 25, worked as an underground supervisor.
His employer was Valley Longwall Drilling and it is understood he was on secondment to Pike River.
Josh's girlfriend, 23-year-old Rachelle Weaver, is due to give birth in May.
Weaver's mother, Nancy Langley, told the Sydney Morning Herald Josh was a "really really lovely young man".
The Courier Mail reported he had been working at the Pike River Mine for six months.
Friends described him as a "real larrikin" and a hard worker.
Josh's parents, Joanne and Karl, flew to New Zealand from Australia and China earlier this week.
Until recently, Josh lived with his father - also a miner - in Townsville, Australia.
On his Facebook page, Josh listed his interests as cricket, partying and socialising.
