The news follows fevered speculation that a movie prequel, based on the plotlines of Candace Bushnell's prequel novels, The Carrie Diaries, and Summer in the City, is also in the pipeline.
The Mail proclaimed earlier this month that the third movie installment would star a bevy of fresh talent: Blake Lively as man-eating Samantha Jones, Selena Gomez as Charlotte, Miranda would be played by Emma Roberts; and Elizabeth Olsen was favourite to play Carrie.
Reps for Lively and Gomez dismissed the casting reports. Olsen also said she was not involved with the mooted prequel.
Olsen said: "My friend who loves blogs told me about it when it was happening and it's not real.
"I love Sex and the City and I would never pretend like I could ever be one of those ladies. No-one is as cool as Carrie Bradshaw!"
Sex and the City helmer Michael Patrick King, who served as co-executive producer of the TV show, and wrote both movies, also said he wasn't involved.
"I'm not working on any Sex and The City prequel at all," he told reporters during the Television Critics Association press tour.
"My Carrie started at 33, and I took her to 43. I didn't even want to know who her parents were. The idea of going back in time...and making her less evolved - the idea of going backward - is not something I'm interested in doing," he said.
"I haven't read Candace's book. I think Candace Bushnell is a brilliant satirist and a really fascinating writer, and I think she can always craft a really interesting area," he added. "I'm sure Candace did a great job on them, but I have no connection to the prequel."
The Mail also speculates that plans for another big screen outing have been shelved in favour of a new small-screen series.
The mole adds: "They want to make the TV series before doing another film."
Gossip certainly signals that something is on the boil. And at this stage, my money's on the show potentially returning as a TV series.
The Los Angeles Times ran a report in early August, claiming that the Mail's take on a prequel was almost on the money.
"According to a person familiar with plans for the property, the tabloid was half right: Something is being considered. It's just not a movie - it's a television show," said the Times' report.
The Times claimed HBO is flirting with the idea of a TV series based on the early years of Carrie Bradshaw, as per Bushnell's latest books.
Both HBO and New Line (who produced and released both SATC flicks) declined to comment.
More Sex please?
But while the powers that be are keeping it zipped, several key Sex and the City cast members have been only to happy to offer their thoughts on the future of the franchise.
Here's a recap of what Parker and her cast mates have said to date:
Sarah Jessica Parker: "I would go back," she told the Los Angeles Times of a proposed Sex and the City 3. "I think there's one more story to tell. I know there is.
"I'd definitely tell that [third] story, and I know Michael [Patrick King] would do it right. But maybe not now. Maybe in five years, you know?" she said.
Addressing reports of a movie prequel, Parker said she struggled with the whole idea.
"I don't think we can pretend to go back," she said. "It's creating two histories. It's like, 'Oh I didn't know that about Carrie Bradshaw.'"
Kristin Davis: "[I'm] not so into the prequel movie, because we're us and we've discussed our history in the show already, so for all of our fervent fans who listen to what we say, why would we rewrite that? And then have like different people with our names? It's kind of freaky."
Chris Noth, who played "Mr Big", famously declared that the franchise is "dead" after SATC2 was slaughtered by critics.
"It's over. The franchise is dead. The press killed it," Noth told New York Magazine last year.
"Your magazine f*****g killed it. New York Magazine. It's like all the critics got together and said, 'this franchise must die.' Because they all had the exact same review. It's like they didn't see the movie. Got any more gum?"
He also said recently: "I don't think they'll do another one because they got hurt very badly by it.
"I think we got skewered, although I'll tell you what, were we really that bad? Were we that bad?"
Kim Cattrall on a possible third installment: "I don't know if it will happen. I really, really have no idea," she told PopEater at the second annual Aruba Film Festival in June.
"I love playing Samantha Jones. I would love playing Samantha Jones again, but I don't know if I will.'
