A police station in Bochum, western Germany was evacuated after a woman brought in what she believed to be a land mine which she had used as a doorstop for the past 10 years. But the object turned out to be an antique bed warmer. "There are events in the life of a policeman that bring beads of sweat to even the most experienced officer," police said later. Barry Young says Auckland traffic is nothing in comparison with Qatar. "I spent 10 weeks as a visitor in Doha which is the capital of Qatar. Authorities were issuing 450 new car registrations each week. Qatar is not a very big country and all drivers drive like maniacs. Once you have your licence, as my wife did, you are made to drive like them or they will just go over you or force you off the road. The one very good idea they had was the green light on your side would flash three or four times before going to the amber and then red. This obviously helped prevent accidents and running a red light for which the fine is $5000."
Tania writes - "Yep, Dubai drivers are the most dangerous, childish, aggressive, rude, inconsiderate, arrogant and idiotic, I have ever seen. The attached photo isn't an accident, it's actually six lanes [well four lanes and two shoulders] trying to merge into two lanes. I've asked people here to explain to me the road rules. It appears there is only one rule - if it's a big black four-wheel-drive, give way to it! Also a lot of vehicles in the UAE are quite faulty. None of the indicators work and the steering systems often take cars across three lanes without warning."
