ACT leader Richard Prebble will not run in Wellington Central in this year's election, he said today.
Mr Prebble told a press conference he would campaign nationwide, pushing ACT's zero tolerance on crime policies.
His aim would be to chase the party vote, which determines how many MPs each party wins in Parliament.
ACT would campaign for the party vote in each electorate, though there remained a chance that high-profile MP Rodney Hide would try to win Epsom.
ACT would stand a "high-profile" candidate in Wellington Central, Mr Prebble said.
"I enjoyed representing Wellington Central but the ACT party's campaign committee wants me to campaign all over New Zealand," he said.
Mr Prebble won Wellington Central in 1996, but was unseated by Labour MP Marian Hobbs in 1999.
