The Armed Offenders Squad have cordoned off part of Bishopdale in Christchurch after being called to a domestic incident.
Cordons have been set up in the Highsted Road area, and police say they are dealing with a man who has been involved in a family dispute.
Local residents have told Newstalk ZB that they have noticed an overwhelmingly strong presence of armed officers.
Police are now talking to the man, and it is hoped the cordons will be removed shortly.
