Police were led on a high-speed pursuit down Auckland's Southern Motorway this morning before the fleeing driver crashed into a median barrier.
Police northern communications centre shift manager Inspector Andy Brill said officers spotted a vehicle with a smashed back window driving in the central city and signalled for it to stop.
Instead, the stolen vehicle went on the motorway and led the single pursuing police vehicle on a south-bound chase which at times reached speeds of 150km/h.
Mr Brill said the pursuit lasted about four minutes before the vehicle crashed into the median barrier near the Greenlane exit.
Police arrested the driver.
