There are fears for the well-being of a 15-metre whale last seen off Banks Peninsula trailing a craypot line.
The whale was last spotted on Monday, but the Department of Conservation doesn't know where it's gone so they can't free it.
Ranger Derek Cox says if it's not freed soon it could die from lack of food.
Derek Cox says the craypot could also cause injury to the whale if its not cut loose.
