A bomb scare has been called off at Defence Headquarters in central Wellington.
All roads around the building have been reopened and defence staff have returned to work.
Wellington Police Inspector Ken Climo said the bomb disposal unit had left the area.
The contents of the package have not yet been determined, but Mr Climo said it did not contain explosives.
Police were called into Defence Headquarters after a suspicious parcel was discovered in the building's offices at 7.54am.
