Fire at beachside cafe

Firefighters are today dampening down a blaze at a beachside cafe in Wellington.

The fire at the Maranui Cafe in Lyall Bay began shortly before 1am, central fire communications shift manager Andrew Tollison said.

Six appliances were used to bring it under control and one crew remained at the scene this morning, Mr Tollison said.

Police said the fire did not appear to be suspicious.
