Work and Income New Zealand has said it was wrong to pay towing and impound fees for the wife of a former gang leader caught driving on a suspended licence.
Last month the Herald on Sunday revealed Marcia Harris was stopped by police in November and her 2007 silver Chrysler saloon impounded for 28 days.
Harris is the wife of Darryl Harris, a former Road Knight and a founding member of Christchurch's notorious Harris Gang.
Winz paid the towing fee and the daily storage fee for the car, estimated to be several hundred dollars.
After Herald on Sunday inquiries, Winz deputy chief executive Patricia Reade ordered a full review, and this week said Harris would have to repay the money.
"The review has shown that on this occasion we got it wrong," she said.
Attempts to contact Harris were unsuccessful.
