KEY POINTS:
A 4.6 magnitude earthquake hit the top of the South Island this morning but there have been no initial reports of damage.
GNS Science reported the earthquake which struck at 4.50am was centred about 40km south of Nelson at a depth of 100km.
It would have been felt in the north of the South Island.
However, both Blenheim and Nelson police said they did not feel anything and there had been no reports of damage.
