A 21 year-old man has appeared in court in relation to a violent assault in which a woman was left for dead.
The man was granted interim name suppression so he can inform his family of his arrest.
The man is charged with assault and cultivating cannabis.
He was remanded in custody without plea until December 3.
The man kept his head down and hands clasped in front of him during his brief appearance at the Auckland District Court. He wore a white police-issue boiler suit.
Detective Sergeant Pete Steward, of Avondale CIB, told the Herald further, more serious charges, were likely to be laid.
Police hoped to be able to speak to the victim later today.
