peThere is a call for a ban on smoking in cars when young children are present.
The research, published in today's New Zealand Medical Journal, reveals 96 percent of smokers surveyed are in favour of such a ban.
Lead author George Thomson says other countries have brought in similar laws and the issue is something the next government could look at.
Dr Thomson says politicians have been hesitant about proposing such a ban in the past because they have thought it would be unpopular and have argued that education should be the first step. He believes that in general, smokers tend to be very considerate about the health implications of smoking near children.
