Interim name suppression was granted to a man involved with a medical organisation who has been charged with possession of child pornography.
The 32-year-old man was arrested this morning on 40 charges laid by the police rather than the usual Department of Internal Affairs.
Duty solicitor Colin Eason sought a remand for two weeks to February 3 and interim suppression until the man had his own legal representation and the charges against him were fully known.
The man faces charges of possession of objectionable publications under the Films, Videos, and Publications Classifications Act.
All 40 charges are representative, indicating that each charge refers to multiple images.
Nineteen charges refer to naked images of pre-pubescent girls, 17 describe sexual activity between girls and adults, and three refer to bestiality.
No pleas were entered at the late afternoon appearance in Christchurch District Court before Judge David Saunders who granted the interim suppression order to February 3 but told the man he could not expect the order to continue past his appearance on that date.
He ordered the man to report weekly to New Brighton Police, not to apply for any travel documents, and to have no unsupervised contact with any children aged under 16 years.
