9.14am: State Highway 2 at Te Puna has just been re-opened following the death of a pedestrian this morning.
Police were speaking with people first on the scene.
A witness told the Bay of Plenty Times a member of the public had been trying to resuscitate a man lying in the middle of the road. Others attempted to manage traffic while waiting for emergency services to arrive, she said.
8.51am: Police have confirmed that emergency services are attending a serious crash at the intersection of SH2 and Ainsworth Road, Te Puna.
In a statement, police said diversions were in place around the scene and no further details were available at this time.
8.05pm: State Highway 2 has now been closed at Te Puna after the death of a man near Ainsworth Rd.
A New Zealand Transport Agency spokeswoman said there was heavy congestion in the area as people made their way to work but detours were in place.
Traffic travelling between Tauranga and Katikati are being diverted down Snodgrass Rd, Borrell Rd, and Te Puna Rd.
She confirmed a pedestrian had died at the scene and the road closure was expected to last at least a couple of hours.
EARLIER: Traffic has been delayed in Te Puna as members of the public attempt to resuscitate a man lying in the middle of State Highway 2.
A witness at the scene near Te Puna Quarry Rd said traffic had slowed right down as a man attempted to perform CPR on a man lying in the middle of the road about 7.20am.
Construction workers in the area were managing traffic while waiting for emergency services to arrive, she said.
The witness said the man appeared to be older, with greying hair.
Traffic was still moving, but slowly, the witness said.
