A man is dead following a house fire in the south Auckland suburb of Papatoetoe today.
A firefighter was also taken to Middlemore Hospital with mild burns to his hands.
Fire Service spokesperson Tony McDonald said staff were notified of the blaze at a Trimmer Terrace house at 1.18pm.
"We got multiple calls from the public. It was certainly well-involved when we arrived at 1.33pm," he said.
"We received a report that a person was missing, so we conducted an immediate search and found one deceased."
A search had been called off for another person as they were not believed to have been in the house, he said.
The fire was still burning but he understood it was winding down.
Radio Live reported that neighbours had to stop the partner of the deceased from running back into her burning home.
It is understood that the man who died lived at the house with his partner and grandson.
It was the second fatal house in South Auckland within 48 hours after a man died in a fire at a house in Otahuhu around midnight on Saturday.
