Our Under-14 boys' rugby team played Western Heights away on Saturday with both teams playing attacking rugby with the score see-sawing throughout the game. MMC prevailed as the winners 38-34 in a very exciting match.
Netball The first round of championship games were played over the weekend.
Following a shuffle at the end of grading games, Mount College Premier retained their spot in the Division 1 grade. They took on Otumoetai Prem 1 and beat them 39-33. Mount Development 1 maintained their position in Division 2 after taking a 27-40 loss to TGA Girls League 2. Their first championship round game against an always tough TGA Girls Junior A proved too much for the development team losing 32-37.
Mount Junior A, however, has made a move up to Division 2 after completing their grading rounds and finishing in the top spot.
Their first game against TGA Girls League 3 proved promising with a 46-32 win over the Tauranga side. Both our Reserve A and Reserve B teams have started the championship round in the top reserve grade division, with Reserve A beating Tga Girls Senior A 28-20.
Coach Tayla Blanchard will be happy with her team's first round performance.
Other highlights for the weekend: 10A Tuis had a win over TGA Girls 10 Diamonds, 43-22; 10B Tawa beat KK Development 2, 26-15; 9B Kiwi took a win over OC 9 Development Green, 35-17; 9C Kowhai also had a win, beating TGA Girls 9 Force, 25-19.
Solid efforts by all teams.
Tauranga Girls'
Badminton
The Junior Bay of Plenty championships were held on Friday, with our girls coming away with extremely pleasing results. In Division One, Jordan Ross, Maddie Mason, Nicola Davis and Hannah Park came first, as did Yvonne Ryan, Jessica Smith, Courtney Johnston and Abbey Cooper in Division two.
Hockey
Wednesday was finals night for the local competition and the 1st XI took on Bethlehem College in what was a tough game, with our girls showing a lot of courage. The team started strongly, with Yasmine Woodhouse scoring in the first two minutes of the game. Many opportunities were created around the goal, however these were not converted and that was to prove costly. Bethlehem played a strong game, with the final score 3-1 in their favour.
The 2nd XI played Aquinas and lost 5-1. It was a tough game and the girls' skills were truly tested. They have improved since the start of the season, but now know what to work on for the rest of the season. Our 3rd XI also had a tough battle on Monday against the Tauranga Girls' junior team. Congratulations to Te Rina Marsh, who scored both of the 3rd XI goals from penalty corners.
But it was not the team's strongest game, unfortunately, and they lost 3-2. With two more weeks until semifinals, the girls will be looking to improve their game in the hope of taking out the grade.
Football
Our 1st XI and 2nd XI battled it out on Saturday in a close game. The seconds started off well, scoring the first goal of the game and they kept up the intensity. However, the firsts pulled themselves together and managed to score three goals to make it a comfortable 3-1 win. Well done to both teams on an excellent game. The 1st XI play Rotorua next and are looking to pick up their performance from this week.
Netball
The League One girls played Katikati Senior A on Friday night and had an awesome game, winning 48-26. This result was pleasing after their last two games to Trident and Hamilton Girls', which were both tough losses.
Basketball
Our Senior Premier Girls played Hillcrest on Friday and won 97-20. It was a good game with all the girls stepping up. The game against Hamilton Girls' in the annual exchange last week was also a good game, considering the team were missing their shooting guard.
The girls stayed positive the whole game and pushed the national champions until the end, losing 50-36. This game has helped the team know what they need to focus on for nationals.

Otumoetai Intermediate
Sports Camp:
Waikato/BOP Totara Springs Sports camp was held last week and 38 students attended. Other schools that attended were Blockhouse Bay Intermediate, Glen Eden Intermediate, Matamata Intermediate, Northcross Intermediate, Peachgrove Intermediate and Takapuna Intermediate.
The week was very competitive and all of our students gained a lot of experience.
At the finish of the sports camp Otumoetai Intermediate came away 3rd overall, just missing 2nd place by two points.
We also came first in the following events and won six Totara Springs Winter Olympics Trophies.
They were for cross country (for third time), indoor hockey girls (fifth time), swimming (fourth time), tennis (second time), outdoor hockey girls (fifth time) and petanque for the first time.
We also came away with the Top Boy Athlete Trophy, won by Zedek Macklow - making a total of seven trophies in total.
A very tired group of students came back to school on Friday afternoon but a fantastic time was had by all. We would like to say a huge thank you to Mrs Bassett, Mr Braddock (from Otumoetai College), Adam Braddock, Megan Lacy and Nicola Clayden for their hard work and the fantastic week of fun experience and confidence that they gave to our students.
Hockey:
What a great game was had on Friday night with Otumoetai Green Team, with most of them only arriving back that afternoon from a week's Sports Camp, giving them a win against Tauranga Intermediate.
They kept the pressure on throughout the whole game and their defence was solid. Their passes were strong and I think with them playing on grass at sports camp it made every player have a huge confidence boost. Overall they all had an amazing game and came away with a 2-0 win.
The black team had a great win against Papamoa on Friday night with a 4-2 win. The girls are really starting to build on their playing skills and are really coming along as a team.
With a very cold night on Friday Otumoetai Boys played a fantastic game against Katikati at BC with a final score of 2-0.
Throughout the game it was noticed how far this team have come, showing some really good control of the ball.
The goals were scored by Bradley and Sam. Well done to all the players.

Indoor Rock Climbing:
Last week a group of 12 rock climbers from TIS travelled to Taupo to compete in the PB/BOP Indoor Rock Climbing Competition.
There were nine schools competing. At the beginning of the day there was a briefing on the rules, then we got straight into it. The Year 7s started and all six climbers did really well.
The Year 8s followed and also progressed really well with their climbs.
The hardest part was having to use designated climbing handles, each handle you touched got one more point.
Overall we did extremely well with Tawera Ohia winning a silver medal for the Year 7 boys, Ebony Thomas winning a bronze medal for the Year 8 girls and Matt Crockett winning the gold for the Year 8 boys.
The Year 7s performed really well as a group and won the shield for TIS.
Unfortunately the Year 8s missed by one point in getting the Year 8 shield.
In the end the outcome was great and a special thanks to Mr MacDonald for coaching and cheering for us.
Golf
Congratulations to Liam McFarlane who won the Graham Cup at Tauranga Golf Club at the weekend.
This was played over three weeks.
Well done to Jodae Ngaheu who finished second.
Bethlehem College
Football
On a beautiful winter's day, BC played Aquinas for the second time this season. BC exerted early pressure with Samuel Sutton, Wisarut Samutpanich and Matt Smith linking up well and delivering some good crosses.
However, halftime came and no goals although BC had played one of their best first halves of the season. Aquinas came out strongly at the beginning of the second half, but the defence, well marshalled by Strauss Boom and Matt Connolly, dealt with any threat. With eight minutes left, Aquinas scored after a corner - only the fourth goal conceded by us this season.
Typically, BC responded strongly and a late valiant effort saw Connolly latch onto a through ball and calmly slot a left-foot goal. The team now looks forward to their game against TBC Juniors, next week at home, as the college celebrates its 25th anniversary.
Netball
On Friday night, the Open A netball played Otumoetai College B. This game was closely contested with first BC and then Otumoetai leading. At three-quarter time the game was in the balance. Unfortunately in the final quarter Otumoetai pulled ahead after Paula Muller at GD had to leave the court due to injury and despite Molly Anning doing a valiant job in defence, and a great effort from the team, we had to concede victory.
Hopefully all those injured will be recovered for next week's game. Congratulations to Tayla Kingsbury and Rebecca Palmer who have passed their Netball Zone Theory Umpire Exam after attending many hours of night courses and to Frances Bridgman who passed her Centre Practical Badge, which is the first practical umpiring exam.
Hockey:
Congratulations to the BC 1st XI Girls Hockey Team. who won their final against Tauranga Girls' 1st XI on Wednesday night 3-1. They again conceded an early goal, but recovered to level the scores by half time. In the second half, the team dominated and with well worked goals to Kate Porter and Caitlyn Proctor emerged as winners. It was a great display by offence and defence, epitomised by Hannah Mellsop's gutsy defending from a TGC attack.
The BC 1st XI Boys were unable to make it a double as they played their finals against Tauranga Boys' 1st XI. They had a strong first half and created some clear chances, but were unable to score. Just before half time, TBC scored from a penalty corner and in the second half converted some chances to win 3-0. Now, both teams start the second half of their winter campaign by playing in the Midlands Schools competition, with the wider Bay and Hamilton schools taking part.
Badminton
The finals of the BOP Junior Secondary Schools Badminton Championships were held at QEYC last Friday. BC had teams in every division. The Intermediate A team made up of Mackenzie Lines, Nick Wotton, Addison Goold and Cameron Murray were unbeaten and won the gold in Division 1. In the final, they played the Intermediate B of Jacky Joe, Cooper Robinson, Jayden Reid and Guy Ten Bokkel Huinink, who therefore won the silver medal.
In the Junior Division 2, BC B of Leon Lim, Jayden Collecutt, Hamish Duncanson and Bernard Reynecke won the gold medal. In the Junior Girls Division 1, the team of Tyla Gartner, Madison Gartner, Caitlin Murray and Georgia Wilson won silver as did the Junior Boys Division 1 Team of Michael Lewis, Garrick Du Toit, Phillip Cho and Henry Nam. This was a successful day with many of the Intermediate students playing in their first tournament. Many of these players will be competing in the North Island Championships for the BOP Region at Palmerston North and will also represent BC later in the season at the AIMS games.
Squash
Congratulations to Olivia McOnie who took second place in the Girls Division 2 competition in the BOP Squash Championships held this past week.

Playing in the Bay of Plenty Senior Girls 1st Division against teams from much bigger schools our Aquinas girls are currently 4th equal on the table. Starring in last week's game against Mount College was Larise Nield who scored 5 goals in a 6-3 victory for Aquinas.

Te Puke High
Rugby
The 1st XV played Tauranga Boys' 3rd XV at Nicholson Fields last Saturday. The boys got off to a great start that put them a few tries ahead, only to undo all the hard work and let in a few soft tries towards the end of the game to eventually draw 22-22. The 2nd XV continue to play a positive brand of rugby and beat Tauranga Boys' 4th XV in a close game 24-22. The girls' 1st XV played Opotiki at Litt Park last Wednesday. A very even first half saw Te Puke trailing only by a few points but Opotiki managed to put some good phases together in the second half and create the overlap out wide, winning by two tries. Congratulations to the girls for making the semifinal, which is to be played this week.
Football
Our girls' 1st XI got their season back on track last weekend with a convincing win over Aquinas Junior Girls. Another solid defensive display from the back laid down the foundation for the forwards. The majority of the game was played in the opposition half and although a few goals were missed early in the game, the girls made up for this with Cathy Campbell (3), Georgia Clark (2) and Tegan Ashton all scoring goals. Ella Litchfield-Harrison and Georgia Clark were the players of the day.
Our Junior A Boys team faced off against the Otumoetai Wanderers at Litt Park. The boys started the game with great intensity, showing off their fitness and strategic game planning. At halftime Te Puke had a commanding 6-0 lead. With the second half starting with the same intensity, Te Puke dominated over Otumoetai and our fitness shone.
Although the boys were only able to get one more past the goalie it was not for want of trying. Final score 7-0. Well done to everyone and special mention to Lauchy Murray on scoring a hat-trick. The Junior B Boys played the Papamoa Strikers and won 5-1. The boys' 1st XI played really well against Bethlehem College 2nd XI. Accurate passing and strong defence secured a 4-1 win.
Netball
The Senior A lost to Aquinas Premier 1 32-39, Senior B lost to Te Puke Junior A, Junior B lost to Tauranga Girls 9A,, 11-41, Junior White won against Aquinas 9B 35-5 and the Junior Blue lost to Bethlehem College 9 Blue.
Hockey The 1st XI Girls had a tough game last Wednesday against Otumoetai Girls' 1st XI, final score 8-0 to Otumoetai. Te Puke lacked possession and territory throughout the game and were unable to get any attack going due to solid defence. On Monday night, our boys' 1st XI played Tauranga Boys' Blue. Te Puke had the majority of possession and shots on goal which were mostly denied by some excellent keeping. The girls' 2nd XI played Papamoa/Aquinas and lost 1-3.
Basketball
Our junior boys played a very good game last Wednesday against Papamoa College. All players worked together to put together a very dominating display. Our senior boys played Mt College, maintaining their unbeaten record wining 72-48. A special thanks to Otumoetai College for playing our senior boys last Friday in a friendly.

Rugby
We had two teams of boys representing Papamoa School at last week's BOP Barbarians Rugby 10s tournament at Paengaroa. It was an awesome day, and another great experience for our kids.
Gymnastics
Our team of well over 50 children plus a cheerleading squad competed on Tuesday at the Te Puke Gymnastics Club. Well done to all involved.
Cross country
Last Monday our team of 29 finely tuned athletes competed at the Mount Cluster event. Papamoa School placed third in the teams event. Five of our team qualified for the WBOP Cross Country Champs held on Tuesday at Waipuna Park.
Term 3 We have lots to look forward to in Term 3, especially the annual 7s (rugby, hockey, netball, miniball, and football) season for our senior students. We also have rugby league and miniball tournaments to look forward to. Further information and dates were in this week's school newsletter.
Tauranga Boys'
Hockey
The 1st XI finished the Tauranga Secondary Schools' Elite division undefeated and won the Peter Stafford Cup. They won the final played on Wednesday night against Bethlehem College 1st XI 3-0. This sees the team take the No 1 ranking for Tauranga into the new Midlands Collegiate grade beginning next Wednesday. In the first half both teams competed intensely with both defences being tested and repelling promising attacks.
Tauranga broke the deadlock just before halftime with a well worked penalty corner finished off on the post by Tom Reid. In the second half Tauranga Boys' midfield began to gain more ascendancy through John Preece, Mark Whitaker and Hamish McGeorge.
They demonstrated more patience in the build-up, stretching the Bethlehem defence wider across the field allowing the strike forwards led by Jeremy Youngman and Tom Reid to get higher behind Bethlehem's defence. The strikers also worked closer as a unit and kept the pressure building on the Bethlehem College defence.
This constructive pressure resulted in more promising penetrations into Bethlehem College's circle and the team was awarded more penalty corners. Hamish McGeorge converted with a drag flick to take the score to 2-0. McGeorge completed the scoring with a one touch deflection that gave Bethlehem's goalkeeper, Luke Fisher no chance of keeping it out.
Badminton
The top junior team is once again BOP champions for 2013 after winning in close ties with Bethlehem College and Western Heights HS. We beat WHHS on count back after finishing the four singles matches and two doubles tied 3-3. We won this on points count back 109-98. After qualifying second to Bethlehem in the Western BOP round, we came up against them again in what essentially was the final.
The top two singles matches went Bethlehem's way but the next two singles were won by TBC with Reuben White and Alex Revington winning in close matches. In the doubles Quinn Porteous and Flynn Alexander came together and won 21-19. This meant we would take the championships if Reuben and Rev could hang on for the victory. They won 21-17 and TBC were again crowned BOP champs. Our 3rd team played well in the division 2 competition taking out the silver after losing narrowly to Bethlehem College 2nd team.
Indoor Bowls
TBC had their most successful tournament in Pairs and Singles at the BOP Championship. Stand- out performances were in the Singles from Joshua Saywell and Nash Smith and in the Pairs from Stefan McCartain & Nathan Arlidge and Dylan Matten & Jasdeep Singh-Kohu. The younger players in the second division performed well, Kaine Hyndman in the Singles and Todd Hemingway & Ricky Gladding in the Pairs. TBC players thank Craig Whiteside, the NZ Indoor Bowls Sports Development Manager, not only for running the BOP Championship with an experienced team but fostering the sport at the local schools.
